Our Estate Planning Process

We Design Estate Plans To Give You Peace of Mind

The process of estate planning allows you to create a plan that carries out your wishes in case you lose the ability to care for yourself (incapacity) and in the event of your death. The plan is built around your values, your goals, and your cherished relationships. At Gomez Edwards Law Group, we strive to reach a clear understanding of who you are so that we can craft a plan that caters to your needs and goals. If you want to minimize any need for court involvement in your life, avoid the risk of future taxes, and ensure that your loved ones have clear guidance from you about your wishes, estate planning is the solution you are looking for.

We take great pride in providing individualized estate planning services specifically designed to meet the unique needs of each client. For this reason, we’ve carefully crafted the following process to make sure that we have the time to fully understand our clients and can create the estate plan that is designed specifically to them.

Initial Consultation (30 minutes)

This consultation is an opportunity for both of us to learn about each other so you can decide whether you feel like we would be a good fit for you.

When selecting an attorney, it is important to choose someone you feel like you can share personal details about your life with. Estate planning is not the time to be shy. It is important for us to know about your family dynamics — the good, the bad, and the ugly. That information is critical for us so we can appropriately craft your documents. Our greatest desire is that the folks we work with understand we are in their corner, and that they feel they can trust us with those important details about their life. We even encourage folks who are not sure to speak with other attorneys.

The Design Meeting

When you have selected our office to serve your estate planning needs, we will set you up for a second meeting. We call this our “design meeting” though you can also think of it as a strategizing session.

At this meeting, we will get into the nuts and bolts of your life. We will review your 1) financial information, 2) your ultimate goals, and 3) your family dynamics. We will then walk you through the various options you have available to you to bring all three of those elements into harmony, fleshing out the details of your documents. For some,  a third meeting may be needed, but we are typically able to complete this initial design phase in one meeting.

The Review

You can expect to receive your documents between 2-3 weeks after the design meeting. Once you receive these documents, you will have the opportunity to review them on your own for 2-3 weeks before our draft review meeting.

At the draft review meeting, we will provide review and discuss your estate plan documents in detail. Our goal here is to ensure that 1) you have a full and complete understanding of the documents prepared for you, 2) to make sure your questions are answered, and 3) lastly to identify if any of your goals or needs have changed.

Wrapping Up Your Case

We will provide as many draft reviews as necessary for you to feel comfortable and confident with your documents. Following the draft review, we will complete all necessary changes and finalize the documents for execution.

To make sure you are comfortable with at your signing appointment,  we have a range of options to accommodate your safety needs regarding COVID.

Once your documents are signed, we will send out your funding documents, make copies, and prepare them for delivery to you.

Summary

Our passion is to create estate plans that our clients are comfortable with, knowledgeable about, and are tailored to their specific needs. If you are ready to set up your estate plan, or modify an existing plan, you’re more than welcome to call us to discuss our process, your goals, and how we might be able to help you achieve them.
